Search engine
Software that searches the Internet for Web sites, E-Mail addresses, Gopher sites, etc. by keywords or menu-based indexes.

Server
A computer (usually a large, central one) that provides Internet services to those who contact it. Some of the services such a server provides include storing Web pages, transferring electronic mail, storing and managing newsgroup discussions, etc.

Shareware
When specific software is distributed for free on the Internet, and users can download it and use it at no cost. If you're interested in using the software past the free trial period, however, you must pay for it.
Signature
The few lines that close every E-Mail message, stating the writer's name and address, as well as additional information, if desired. (See E-Mail.)
Silverplatter
A menu-based search engine with an index of files, arranged both alphabetically and by category. (See search engine.)
Site
A computer that supplies some sort of service. For example, a Web site provides Web services, an FTP site provides FTP services. (See Web site.)
Smileys
A combination of signs that are meant to express body language or feelings, such as a smile, anger, sadness, etc. These are used frequently on IRC and E-Mail. (See IRC, E-Mail.)
SMTP- Simple Mail Transport Protocol
The communication protocol used on the Internet to send electronic mail. (See Protocol, E-Mail.)
Snail mail
The nickname for standard mail. Internet users chose this nickname because it emphasizes the slow rate of standard mail as compared to E-Mail. (See E-Mail.)
System7
The Macintosh operating system, based on windows and graphics.
This is the minimum operating system that enables you to run Netscape on Macintosh.

The person responsible for the operation of the host computer. (See host.)
Subscribe
Adding a newsgroup to the list of newsgroups that a user is interested in reading. (See Usenet, newsgroups.)
Sysop
Short for "system operator", the person who is responsible for operating the ISP computer. (See ISP.)
